Getting barrelled is something bodyboarders dream of day and night. The thrill of riding the waves’ energy whilst being fully immersed inside is addictive and something that draws you back time and time again for more.
Earlier this month in Portugal we were joined by Stephen, a former American football player that now practises as a self employed psychologist. Living in the USA and with a passion for the ocean, he joined us looking to learn more about bodyboarding to improve his time spent catching waves outside of his RV home. With the assistance of Mave and Joao, we helped Stephen to go from catching broken waves to getting his first ever tubes in just four days.
“The week I spent in Portugal under the support and direction of Mave and Joao was amazing. With trust in the teaching and the technique I discovered that I was able to ride waves successfully. They were incredibly knowledgeable and the trip enabled me to test out the technical skills they suggested.”
In just a couple of days Stephen had progressed quickly. With a better understanding of taking off and trimming, Mave and Joao felt it was time to introduce him to the art of the barrel ride.
“I knew it was going to be turbulent. I knew I would suck. Fail. Get my ass kicked by the wave. But in the end by managing my emotions and expectations, and trusting the time-tested technique, I was able to go from the white wash to catching barrels. I’m hooked!”
It was an absolute pleasure hanging out with Stephen and the rest of the guests and watching them progress. Many of them are returning guests and we look forward to welcoming them back on future trips.
