7 Amazing Things about Desert Bodyboarding Trips

December 2, 2015
campingunderthestarsfb Fresh back from our recent trip to the fringes of the Sahara on our North African Adventure Division’ bodyboarding trip and we are buzzing. Here are the 7 things that amazed us. Words by Rob Barber Awesome images by Aaron Parsons Photography. Incredible Landscapes
  1. Stopping at places of interest on the way down really opened our eyes to the beauty of Morocco. Some of mother nature’s finest work blew our minds and most of the sites that we visited had really good quality waves nearby.
Bodyboarders Band Together
  1. The camaraderie that is built between you and your crew as you load the van, buy supplies and then find your site to camp is second to none. You soon realize that if you don’t pull your weight and collect firewood then as soon as the sun dips you will be cold. You pull together and work as a team to make things happen.
Empty Line-ups
  1. We scored a pointbreak of supreme quality. A rivermouth with wrapping right hand walls, the odd barrel section and playful shoulders and bowls. None of us had ever surfed the spot before and it was amazing to pick off perfect waves together. Better still, we were only on the road for just over an hour before we scored it!
Crazy Wildlife
  1. As we neared the end of the road (literally where the road turns to desert) and left civilization behind we started to experience some crazy wildlife. Huge birds of prey swooped by as chipmunks and squirrels regularly crossed our path. The place is alive.
Incredible Sunsets/ Insane Stars
  1. As we made camp, stoked up the fire and got dinner cooking we all had a little time to sit and watch the most incredible sunset. Total silence fell as the sun sank beneath the ocean.  If you haven’t experienced a night sky with out light pollution before, then you should. We were treated to an incredible display of shooting stars. As the moon rose it got so light that we could see each other’s faces with out torchlight. Strange that a night sky could be so impactful. I don’t think it is something that any of us will ever forget. Pretty mind blowing stuff.
Trust in your guides
  1. As we sat around the campfire addicted to its glow, our local guides helped us cook food, prepare drinks and ensure that the camp was running well. Their Sahara experience and desert survival skills are in-built after years of fishing and surfing trips in to the desert. Watch and learn.
  1. Waking up in front of the waves
Lift your head off your pillow, un-zip the tent door and crane your head through the flap. The empty waves are right in front of you. Life doesn’t get much better! Join us in March on an adventure you will never forget! Check out this link for all the information. Below are some more images from the trip for you to see.
