A WEEKEND ON THE BEAUTIFUL GOWER PENINSULAR
Simply put, our Welsh bodyboarding weekend is a chance to enjoy a super-chilled couple of days catching great waves, improving your technique, and meeting a bunch of like-minded boogers in a breathtakingly beautiful part of the world, the Gower Peninsular, designated as the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
The Gower features truly stunning beaches, dramatic cliffs, wild moors, woodlands, and gorgeous views everywhere you go. While most bypass South Wales for the allure of the South West of England, the Gower has a huge and surprising amount to offer wave riders, with a great variety of beaches and reef breaks, it’s easier to find a quiet peak to surf ourselves silly!
If you’ve never been bodyboarding before, fancy learning a new sport in a safe environment and meeting likeminded folk, this weekend provides the ideal introduction. At the same time, if you’re a keen rider wanting to master the sport’s most difficult moves, our coaching will help you improve no end. Every rider is taught as an individual, so you aren’t pushed along too quickly or held back by others.

SUNDAY
The Gower has a great variety of bodyboarding breaks, from huge expanses of open beach to punchy reefs, peaky A-frames and hollow shories.
LLANGENNITH
On the exposed west coast at Rhossili Bay you’ll find the famous three-mile long Llangennith Beach, a gorgeous stretch of golden sands. There’s a reason it’s constantly voted as one of the most beautiful beaches in Britain.
In the water, it’s a bodyboard coaching paradise, offering bowly peaks at high tide and hollow banks at low.
THREE PEAKS
At the Three Peaks end of the beach there’s a whole heap of wedgy goodness, and on a SE/E wind the waves are groomed and open all the way down, providing long walls and carveable sections.
Llangennith offers something for everybody, and the best thing is there’s always plenty of room!
You need to organise your own accommodation for this bodyboard coaching weekend.
The majority of our guests choose to camp at Hillend Camp Site. The camp site is perfectly positioned for easy access to the beach each day.
If camping’s not your bag, there is also the bed and breakfast accommodation at the nearby Kings Head pub. There are also numerous options on Air BnB. Whichever option you choose, we recommend booking your accommodation early, as it can get busy.
On Saturday morning, jump out of your campervan or tent and grab yourself a coffee from the on-site cafe. Enjoy your cup of morning brew whilst watching the sun rise and the waves roll in with your fellow bodyboarding buddies. Backed by rolling sand dunes, the campsite is just the spot to check the day’s conditions as you fuel up on breakfast together.
At lunch, we may head to Eddy’s, a great little beachside cafe with sea views and a sun terrace. The menu is varied, with plenty of local dishes that cater to different dietary requirements. Check out local art and photography displayed on the walls, or simply chill out and chat after a great morning’s surf. This is often where we do our photo and video analysis session. Our plans are always subject to change in order to ensure that we always hold our bodyboarding sessions when the waves are at their best.
Our Saturday evening meal is a highlight of the weekend. We’ll head to our fave country pub for a group meal where we will continue our bodyboard related chat. This is the time that the instructor team will spend time with the group answering questions, explaining techniques, discussing kit, travel and sharing stories of their best bodyboarding experiences.
Our bodyboard weekend wraps up after lunch on Sunday.
We have four levels of bodyboarding progression. Using our exclusive Tree of Bodyboarding Knowledge, we plot your progress through each stage using land, water and video analysis. These include pre and post weekend videos and tutorials.
Our coaching team comprises multiple time national champions, Damian Prisk and Rob Barber. The photography and video analysis team are highly trained to capture all of your rides and deliver high standard land and water footage.
One of the Gower’s main benefits is its accessibility. Being located much closer to the Midlands, the North and the east of the country than Cornwall or Devon, the Gower makes for a perfect spot for those who don’t fancy a long drive down south.
The M4 motorway delivers you right to Swansea, the gateway to the peninsula, and the city also has a train station with regular ‘explorer’ buses taking you into the heart of the action. Alternatively, you can get a taxi from Swansea to Llangennith.
If you are travelling by public transport, Gower Explorer buses run regularly from Swansea’s Quadrant Centre – call 0870 608 2608 for a timetable. Services 116 and 118 go to Llangennith village at the end of the line. Once you’ve arrived, get off at the crossroads, turn left at the mini-roundabout and walk ¾ mile to Hillend Campsite.
If you’re flying in, Cardiff International Airport is only 1 hour 30 mins away by car.
The Gower was designated the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1956 and it’s easy to see why. The peninsula features truly stunning beaches, dramatic cliffs, wild moors, sheltered woodland and gorgeous views in every direction.
While many people bypass South Wales for the golden allure of the South West of England, the Gower has a huge and surprising amount to offer wave riders. There are a great number of beaches and reef breaks and the coastline faces a variety of different directions, so much so that stormy westerly winds can be bang offshore.
It comes as no surprise that a third of the peninsula comprises national nature reserves or sites of Special Scientific Interest. It doesn’t take long to traverse and explore and when you’ve visited once – it’ll be forever on your radar.
The Gower is a little nugget, easily accessible for much of the country’s population but often overlooked. This is great for us bodyboarders – it’s easier to find a quiet peak to surf ourselves silly!
FOOD, DRINKS & SHOPPING
£12 – £15 for optional Saturday evening meal
TRANSPORT
On the rare occasion that we do change location we tend to carpool during the retreat. If you are sharing a ride with somebody on the event it’s expected that you will contribute a few pounds towards fuel or car parks.
EQUIPMENT HIRE
If you decide not to bring your own kit (or you don’t own it) to hire equipment for the weekend the prices are as follows;
Swim fins – £20 for 2 days
Board – £25 for 2 days
Wetsuit – £20 for 2 days
More equipment and hire periods are available, just add to checkout when you book your weekend.
The Gower’s climate is a positive combination of factors – being located only a short distance from Devon’s north coast means it also benefits from good average annual sea temperatures, with warm summers, mild winters and excellent swell exposure.
This is great for a few reasons – we maximise our chances of hitting decent swell year-round, giving us the best run of the banks at one of the most consistent spots in Wales.
Whatever the season, Llangennith is hugely reliable and a perfect playground to progress your riding. The weekend is all about enjoying the swell and building on your skill set.
As for the weather, it’s Wales! We’d suggest packing both sunscreen and a warm, lightweight, waterproof jacket to cover all bases.
At the time of booking, you will receive an email listing all the kit you need for the Wales bodyboard weekend.
Hire equipment is available, just add to checkout when you book your weekend.
