Nicaragua – Spot Check

March 22, 2015

By Callum Morse

Dark volcanic sands lead to deep blue hues as morning barrels peel their way to the shoreline. Nicaragua is growing ever more popular with the surfing world and for good reason. The land of lakes and volcanoes offers up the perfect mix of warm water, barrels, incredible landscapes, friendly locals and some of the best rum you’ll ever taste.

A little breakdown:

Seasons: Green Season, May to November – Dry Season, December to April
Swell: December through March offers a great mix of fun-sized waves consistently around shoulder-high accompanied by stronger and more consistent offshore winds. The biggest swells tend to hit March through November however the morning offshore tends to switch earlier and heavy rain and storms can make surfing difficult.
Fly into: Managua (MGA)

Bring: Warm water board (PP core), a few pairs of boardies and a rash guard (it’s toasty). Plenty of sun cream, the sun can be powerful even during an early morning surf. Some extra T-shirts for the local groms can always put a smile on their faces.

What to expect daily?
The general day-to-day living is super-chilled. Early starts are a must to get the best of the offshore wind; generally a fuller tide in the morning is the perfect recipe to get you some long pits. Afternoons where the wind switches onshore you can make the choice to hit the pool, a hammock or grab a paddleboard and go explore. The fishing is incredible too. It’s not uncommon to roll past a few sperm whales cruising if you’re out on a boat.

The waves?
With a solid array of different breaks you can generally head out most mornings and pick the style of surf that tickles your fancy. Get barrelled off your head at a heaving beach break, practise those spins on an open-faced rolling point or a bit of airtime action at a quiet wedge, the choice is yours. We keep finding new spots every trip it’s insane.

Crowds?
Although the Nicaragua is growing in popularity the quantity of waves and the size of the beaches themselves mean that you never have to really compete for waves. Most mornings you can roll down the beach and pick an empty peak for yourself and your friends.

Other activities?

So you’re all surfed out, the wind’s switched onshore and you’re up for a bit of adventure and exploration, no problem! If you up for a bit of local culture head to the old Spanish towns and cities with a rich history, beautiful cathedrals and some incredible street food.  Other popular activities include horseback riding, fishing, Stand Up Paddle boarding and checking out the local turtle sanctuary and fish farms.

In summary?
Sharing perfect barrels under looming volcanoes with just you and your buddies out is not something you’ll tire of easily. Friendly locals and amazing landscapes around every headland bursting with wildlife. Get yourself out there.
