Giving Back To El Salvador’s Local Bodyboarders

May 8, 2024

At Bodyboard Holidays, our mission goes beyond chasing waves and sharing our passion with others; it’s about fostering connections and giving back to the global bodyboarding community.

Bodyboarding Paradise El Salvador

At the end of January each year, Bodyboard-Holidays visit El Salvador for our annual bodyboard coaching holiday. During the trip we have a standing arrangement with the local bodyboarding community that we will meet up for an evening of sunset waves, drinks and to enjoy each others company. It is during this meet up that the bodyboarders on the trip, gift the local bodyboarders with equipment. We give bodyboards, swim fins, rash vests, fin tethers, leashes. This equipment is gold dust for the local bodyboarders. The reason being that the high import costs of bodyboarding equipment and the low local wages make it very difficult for riders to afford new bodyboarding kit.

Bodyboarding Equipment for the locals

This year company Director, Rob Barber from Bodyboard-Holidays teamed up with Jay and Vicki Reale of eBodyboarding to pledge a brand new Tribe bodyboard for top local rider Rene, who is trying his best to make a name for himself in the Panamerican and world bodyboarding scene. Further to this, the crew gifted more brand new and used boards to the upcoming male and female riders. As always, it was a beautiful sunset with fun waves and epic vibes between the local bodyboarders and the international contingent on the Bodyboard-Holidays trip. It’s always a real highlight of our annual trip. The stoke was real and with no hanging around, Rene led the local riders straight out to the shorebreak to try their new equipment. The riding level was, as always, sky high and everyone was buzzing to see the locals shred on their new kit.

We’re super grateful to Mutsu and the other local riders for being so welcoming to us over our years of visiting El Salvador. The warmth and genuine stoke that they extend to us in the water is a real highlight of our sessions.

Bodyboarders sharing with other Bodyboarders

El Salvador is one of the rare locations that we visit, much like Portugal, where there are often as many bodyboarders in the water as surfers. They run the show at most of the main breaks and we respectfully share the line up with them each year and genuinely marvel at their wave riding brilliance. It would be remiss for me not to mention the incredible skills of stand up bodyboarder Zancudo who blows our mind year on year. There is simply no rider in the world that can ride a bodyboard like him and it always leaves our guests awe struck when they see him in action.

El Salvador holds a special place in our hearts, standing out as a beacon of warmth, talent and passion within the bodyboarding world.

Three Bodyboarding waves within 2 minutes of our accommodation

The bodyboarding scene in El Salvador is truly remarkable, characterised by its unparalleled hospitality and exceptional talent. As enthusiasts who have explored bodyboarding spots across the globe, finding this hidden gem was like striking gold! Uncovering this wave-riding paradise that is both welcoming and filled with inspiring bodyboarders truly blows our minds. A little bodyboarding village with a wedge, a pointbreak and a beach break all within a 2 minute walk of our accommodation, seems almost perfectly designed for wave riding fun!

Each year, we eagerly return to El Salvador and are greeted with open arms by the Salvadoran locals. This warm welcome makes us feel like part of their vibrant bodyboarding family. It’s a privilege for us to contribute to their bodyboarding journey and the progression of the sport in Central America, especially knowing that quality equipment is often scarce in this region.

We’re also delighted to have Jay and Vicki Reale, pro bodyboarders and owners of ebodyboarding.com and Tribe bodyboards, join us regularly. They share our love for El Salvador and are always keen to donate quality equipment to the locals, further enhancing the growth of bodyboarding in this vibrant community.

Our goal extends beyond providing equipment to the locals; we aim to foster the growth of bodyboarding from a grassroots level up, sharing our knowledge, skills, and resources. We hope that this will help cultivate an already thriving bodyboarding culture in El Salvador that continues to flourish year on year.
