Why Costa Rica is a Bodyboarder's Paradise

Costa Rica offers an unbeatable blend of tropical weather, warm ocean water, consistent waves, lush jungle scenery, and welcoming culture. Spots like Santa Teresa are renowned for their reliable surf, making it an ideal destination whether you’re starting out or seeking the perfect barrel. For bodyboarders, the beaches provide multiple breaks suited to various skill levels, and the local environment is as relaxing as it is inspiring.

Interview with Dan - From First Trip to Costa Rican Local

Rob Barber: Dan, you’re one of our lifelong Bodyboard Holidays guests. Could you share a bit about your journey?

Dan: Sure! I was born in the Midwest, moved to New York City, and later began visiting Australia regularly. One Christmas, a friend took me to a sports store, and I picked up a bodyboard. Back in the US, I searched “bodyboarding,” found Bodyboard Holidays, and immediately booked trips – first Spain, then Portugal, Morocco, and eventually Costa Rica. When I arrived in Santa Teresa, I fell in love. I’ve lived there full-time for the last 10 years!

Rob: What was it about Santa Teresa that captured your heart?

Dan: Santa Teresa has multiple incredible breaks right along the coastline. The lush jungle meets the sand, and the scenery from the water is just stunning. Palm trees overhead, fresh coconuts waiting after a session, howler monkeys in the trees – it’s paradise. Plus, the locals are incredibly friendly, and the food is amazing. Surfing sessions in the early morning and late afternoon are perfect due to the cooler temperatures, and the water is always warm, like bathwater.

Rob: It’s always fantastic catching up with you annually on our Costa Rica bodyboard trips!

Dan: That’s another great part – meeting repeat guests every year from all over the world and making lasting friendships. Bodyboarders are just such easygoing people; it’s a fantastic community. Your coaching team’s detailed video analysis and professional tips have significantly improved my riding and many others’.

Rob: That’s exactly our goal, Dan! It’s a real pleasure seeing you settle into life in Costa Rica, and it’s great learning about new local spots from you each year.

Dan: Absolutely! I’m turning 79 this June, and I’m still chasing big waves – even if I occasionally end up in the washing machine. But that’s the thrill of it!

Rob: You’re an inspiration to us all, Dan. We can’t wait for many more years of waves together.

Final Thoughts & Inspiration
