Bristol’s Wave Pool
Located near Bristol, the wave pool is the latest and greatest in manmade surf spot technology, providing a range of epic left and right-hand sections for you to charge, carve and boost out off! Produced by the best in the business, a company named Wave Garden from the Basque country of northern Spain, they have single handedly revolutionised wave riding. Who’d have expected to see this in a field in Bristol!?
Our top 20 riders will be split in to two groups of 10. The first 10 will ride the right hander while the second 10 ride the left hander. Our professional videography team will shoot the action to document this iconic event. There will be an hour long break in between when the guys will get to study their performance using laptops before hitting the water again.
This is an epic celebration of UK bodyboarding, taking place on one day. If you’re travelling to Bristol the day before and looking to stay over there are a whole range of local B&Bs and accommodation options nearby, which will ensure you’re close to the pool and ready for action on the day itself.
While Bristol is located in the south west, the warmest part of the country, it’s still England in the spring. As a result you can expect sun, wind, rain, clouds and hail showers, who knows! So when you’re watching the pros shred we’d recommend bringing a warm waterproof as much as we would some sunglasses.
The pool is a similar temperature to the air, so a good quality wetsuit, socks and possibly gloves / hat depending on the day for those participating in the water sessions. We promise that you’ll be having so much fun, the last thing on your mind will be the temperature!
Awesome food onsite Budget £10 – £15 for a delicious meal. This is optional.
The top 20 UK riders know better than most how to ride a wave but we’ll also be providing a pre-wave pool presentation session, where we’ll give the group a detailed breakdown of what to expect when surfing the artificial wave and to answer any questions you may have. We’ll focus on how we will achieve the highest standards of riding from the sessions.
The video feedback after the first and second sessions will offer an open forum for riders to discuss how to continually raise the bar of British bodyboarding. That’s what this day is all about, pushing the boundaries, scoring amazing man made waves and having the most fun possible. Having previously surfed the artificial wave, Rob and his team have invaluable first-hand experience on how to ride the various sections offered up, and can offer tips to you can make the most of this unique opportunity.
Guests are to make their own way to The Wave. We’ll confirm the meeting time and location on the Friday prior to the weekend (by email) as it is dependant on final numbers as to the time that you will bodyboard.
For those travelling from the south west we will car share to minimise environmental impact. When we have finished our session at The Wave pool every body can go their separate ways or car share if travelling back down to the south west.

Most of the UK’s best riders already live in Cornwall or south Wales but If you’re looking to check out the wave pool action then turn the day into a longer trip, why not explore the beautiful south west of England?
In addition to the wave pool at Bristol, the region has world-class beaches and the best ocean surf in the country with an excellent variety of waves and high swell consistency.
To cap off an adrenaline-filled trip, why not continue to Cornwall and experience the thrill some ocean based bodyboarding sessions of your own?
The UK’s best will show up with their own top of the line boards, suits and fins but if you’re looking to ride The Wave or grab some waves in the south west during your visit this is what you’ll need.
Being Britain and not the tropics, we’d recommend a board with a bit of flex! Therefore aim to bring a board with either a stringered PE or a low-density PP core.
To help with this, we can supply hired boards which are perfect for use in British temperatures and wave types.
If you need to hire one for the weekend, or are interested in trying one different to your own, get in touch and we can get you sorted with the right-sized board so you can get the most out of the weekend.
Although Cornish waters are the mildest in the country, we’d still recommend bringing along a decent wetsuit.
A winter 5/3mm is perfect for the cooler times of year, or a sealed-seam 3/2mm is ideal for sunny Kernow’s summer and autumn seasons.
It’s essential to use a pair of comfortable, powerful, bodyboarding swim fins to get the most from the awesome waves on the trip.
It’s a simple insurance policy on any trip, so don’t forget a leash – it’ll save you a whole load of unnecessary swimming.
Bodyboard travel bag
A decent board bag will keep your kit safely protected throughout your journey, especially when you consider the brutality of some baggage handlers. They range from £20 to more than £100 – the more you pay, the better protection you get. The best on the market is the Creatures wheelie bag, it’s heat-reflective, padded and you can wheel it around, saving your arms and shoulders for paddling.
Board socks perform a dual purpose, protecting your board from the sun, and drying you off as it’s a handy towel. The humble board sock is a great all-rounder.
If you don’t wear wetsuit socks and want to prevent rub around your heels, it’s worth considering a set of heel shields. They make fins comfortable, stop chafe and have different thickness levels to suit the snugness of your fin.
Don’t let a lost fin ruin the rest of your trip. Bag a set of tethers and know you’ll pop up from every duckdive and wipeout with both fins still attached.
There are a range of sun creams geared specifically for bodyboarding. We can attest they actually stay on in the water, and we’ve tested them in some searing conditions.
While we can’t guarantee bright blue skies, there’s nothing worse than having to sit out on an epic session because your suncream washed off yesterday and today you’re painfully crispy.
Please bring warm clothing suitable for all weathers. Layers are the best option to make sure you are covered for all weather conditions.
Reuseable Water Bottle
Please bring a reuseable water bottle as we won’t always have time to get to the shops before our sessions.
We want you to get the riders and the spectators to get the most out of this special one-off bodyboarding extravaganza, so you’ll get a mix of witnessing the best riders smash the lefts and rights on the elite setting, while seeing them discuss how to improve during their next session and reflect in the after session vid review discussion.
Surfing the artificial wave is unique in its guaranteed, repetitive perfection, giving the riders the chance to put into practice the developments they’ve made, and build on things they’ve learned.
The pre- surf presentation will include the structure which each group should follow to make sure that everyone takes it in turns, doesn’t get in each others way and really work together to maximise this opportunity.
The session will be videoed from the central jetty, so you can improve literally from session to session and wave to wave.
By the end of the day everyone will have surfed themselves silly, watched the video session, and ended with plans on where it’s possible to take UK riding in the future. Who will be the rider that boosts the biggest backflip? Who will get the longest barrel? Who will challenge the ledging take offs on drop knee? There is only one way to find out, come and watch the action.
There is quality food on site, so we’re looking forward to kicking back with the UK’s best and enjoying some banter about who is going to rip, who was ripping and who didn’t raise their game. There is no hiding in the pool, let’s see what the UK’s best can do!

“Such an epic fun weekend on the bodyboarding coaching weekend with Rob Barber and his awesome team (Luke, Gareth, Chris, Jamie, Jack, and Hannah). Fun waves to be had even though the forecast was looking small the swell definitely picked up or the forecast was wrong so proves you should always turn up and get in! I was learning rolls and spins 70% there!”
“Have just completed the coaching weekend in Newquay with my 13 year old daughter. I am totally shocked at the level of improvement she made over a single weekend…. she has gone from playing in white water to competently getting out back and trimming on open faced waves. We both can’t wait for the next coaching weekend!“
