Our Aim

This incredible wave pool produces flawless right and left hand waves that are almost identical each time, so you can practice your trimming, turns and manoeuvres all under the close-up guidance of our expert coaches.

There are three ways to join us during this coaching weekend:

Join the full weekend… Simply put, we prepare your riding skills so you can get the most out of The Wave pool. We improve your performance in the ocean, so you can maximize your fun at this incredible new wave pool.

Join for a day of bodyboarding in Newquay… As far as ocean surf, there is nowhere better to improve your bodyboarding in Britain than Cornwall – especially with all the beaches Newquay offers. This is where the first half of our ultimate coaching weekend on the Saturday will take place. Newquay offers the perfect training ground to make sure everyone is up and ready…

Join us for a day of bodyboarding at The Wave, Bristol… before the second half, which takes place at the best man-made surf spot in the country! At Bristol’s new wave pool you can surf the exact same perfect left and right-handers over and over again to dial in your new skills. It’s unquestionably the best way to improve your riding and reach that next level.

Waves

Bristol’s Wave Pool

Located near Bristol, the wave pool is the latest and greatest in man-made surf technology, providing a range of epic left and right-hand sections for you to trim, tuck in, carve and boost out of!

After a steep take off, the wave offers up a decent shoulder to carve out a big turn or reverse, before setting you up for a legit barrel section and a punchy lip to launch a roll (or more!) from.

Want to concentrate on only improving your rights or lefts? No problem – each side is identical and allows you flawless repetition, to really dial in your riding. As well as delivering a range of sections, it also allows our expert coaches to stand on the jetty (which runs out through the middle of the peaks) to give you close-up advice and guidance after each wave is ridden.

Towan Beach

The most sheltered of Newquay’s town beaches, Towan is the perfect spot when the unprotected west-facing beaches are big and blown out, still providing clean conditions.

The harbour at Towan provides fairly consistent lefts, and is best at mid tide on the push. It’s a great place to head on a SW wind when everywhere else is too big.

Fistral Beach

The jewel in the crown of Cornwall’s surf scene, Fistral is a high-quality beachbreak, providing excellent waves on an offshore SE wind.

It works on all stages of the tide and offers multiple peaks. There’s a reason this is the UK’s most famous surf beach!

Tolcarne Wedge

One of the best wedges in the UK, Tolcarne is located in the middle of Newquay and stands up as a classic A-frame left, which refracts off the cliff and fires riders down the line into advancing sections.

A hugely fun ride from mid to high tide, it’s the premier place on the north coast to launch big manoeuvres and see dramatic improvements in your air game.

Accommodation

Newquay

You won’t need to travel too far from the waves to reach your accommodation. The weekend is based out of Towan beach, which is right in the heart of Newquay and just a short walk from any centrally-located accommodation. It’s also a short drive from the outskirts with plenty of nearby parking available.

SELF CATERING:

Bodyboard-Holiday’s ‘Sunset Views’ Apartment, Newquay

We have our very own spacious two-bedroom modern apartment  (sleeping up to six guests) , overlooking Fistral Beach with amazing sea views. It is perfectly placed near the golden sandy beaches and Newquay town centre. Fistral Beach is only an eight-minute walk away and the Gannel estuary and Crantock beach are five minutes away. The unique coastal location allows guests to take the coastal paths to beaches or main roads.

Based on the third floor (with elevator or stairs access), it has a large lounge with a private, south-facing balcony that is perfect for catching some sun, checking the surf and taking in the amazing pink sunsets.

We ask you to prepare a packed lunch so that we can enjoy our surfari along the coast. We’d recommend fruit, nuts and other fibre-filled snacks to keep you energised for your water sessions. We offer free tea and coffee from our base at Towan beach while in Newquay, and all eat our lunch while watching the video review sessions. We visit our favourite local restaurant on Saturday evening and enjoy fantastic local food.

Their menus always have a range of prices and dishes suited to different tastes, diets, moods, appetites and budgets. You’ll always find plenty of choices that do you good, and fuel you for bodyboarding. But you’ll also find treats, if you fancy a bit of indulgence. The menu caters for all budgets and various dietary requirements, featuring everything from buttermilk pancakes and avocado on toast to baked cod loin and jerk-fried jackfruit.

Coaching The Wave Bodyboard Coaching Weekend

Coaching

Our coaching team offers daily tuition, tailored to your ability with instructors who are in-house qualified and fully insured. The team includes experienced lifeguards, some with 30 years of surfing experience and 20 years of worldwide travel experience, including multiple-times British number 1 and Team Coach Rob Barber.

Having previously surfed the artificial wave, Rob and his team have invaluable first-hand experience on how to ride the various sections offered up, and can offer game-changing tips so that you can make the most of this unique opportunity.

Foundation, Improver and Advanced Coaching available

You’ll never be thrown straight into the deep end. We’ve got your back whatever your ability – that’s a promise. Likewise, intermediate and advanced-level coaching is individually tailored.

Don’t stress if you’re a beginner – in this camp there’s something for everyone, and we all have to start somewhere. In fact, you’ll be amazed how quickly you master paddling out to catch good-quality waves, and we’re committed to patiently helping you progress.

To aid with this, we send out a pre-event form to measure your ability before you arrive. If you’ve not attended a coaching weekend or holiday before, don’t worry – we can have a surf assessment, get to grips with your riding and help plot you a path of improvement.

Our coaching covers all levels of riding, with separate ability groups and instructors to suit your standard, whether you’re a novice or a pro.

Joining us for the full weekend? As well as ocean coaching, we’ll also be providing a pre-wave pool tutoring session, where we’ll give you a detailed breakdown of what to expect when surfing the artificial wave, and answer any questions you may have. This way you’ll be as prepared as you can be when tackling its drops, barrels and sections!

Video analysis will be available throughout all sessions to help improve your riding, and this will be available to take away and keep at the end of the weekend, all included in the price.

If you are arriving by public transport and need a lift to The Wave on Sunday, please let us know so we can arrange this in advance.

The Wave Guests should make their own way to The Wave. We’ll confirm the meeting time and location on the Wednesday prior to the weekend (by email) as your time slot is dependent on final numbers.

For those travelling from the south west, we will car share to minimise environmental impact. Please let us know if you would like to arrange a lift or are happy to drive others . When we have finished our session at The Wave, everybody can go their separate ways or car share if travelling back down to the south west.

Area The Wave Bodyboard Coaching Weekend

Area

The Wave, Bristol

The Wave is situated on the outskirts of Bristol. This 180m-long surfing lake delivers an unrivalled inland surf experience suitable for everyone from beginners to seasoned pros.

Newquay

Known as ‘Kernow’ to locals, Cornwall is a wild, rugged county, located in the far south-western tip of England.

Apart from its world-class beaches, excellent variety of waves and high swell consistency, it boasts a unique culture, clean air, and bright light – it’s no wonder poets, authors and artists have been coming here for centuries!

Head back inland from Cornwall’s beautiful beaches, bays and coves and you’ll find wild moorland, granite-topped hills, ancient stone structures and ubiquitous tin mine pump houses, unmistakable silhouettes of the area’s famous mining history.

Today, one of Cornwall’s main industries is tourism, and there are a million and one things to do.

Why not head down for the week before the weekend, and experience the thrill of coasteering, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding at our sister company, Newquay Activity Centre? As a guest you’ll be entitled to discounted rates on any of the activities.

CLIMATE

The Wave, Bristol

Unlike the ocean, The Wave pool is the same temperature as the air. Pack accordingly for in-water and out-of-water action, depending on the weather forecast.

Newquay

Cornwall’s air and sea temperatures are among the warmest in the UK, thanks to the jet stream and the Gulf Stream. Expect a comparatively mild climate and temperate seas, all year round.

With a long, varied coastline of differing micro-climates from one beach to the next, you’re likely to be soaking up the rays as much as the waves, whatever the season.

We’ll be getting in so much water-time, that come rain, wind or shine, we’ll be buzzing regardless!

Kit List

We offer an excellent selection of kit hire for the weekend. Just send us an email or call us on +44 (0) 1637 879571 to let us know what you would like to hire and we will have it ready and waiting for you when you arrive. Then, once everything is organised, all you need to think about is the surf, sea and sun! Please see the Price Tab for our hire rates.

If you have your own kit please bring it along with you. We recommend that you have the following kit for the weekend:

ESSENTIALS

Bodyboard

Being Britain and not the tropics, we’d recommend a board with a bit of flex! Aim to bring a board with either a stringered PE or a low-density PP core.

To help with this, we can supply hired boards that are perfect for use in British temperatures and wave types.

If you need to hire one for the weekend, or are interested in trying one different to your own, get in touch and we can get you sorted with the right-sized board so you can get the most out of the weekend.

Wetsuit

Although Cornish waters are some of the mildest in the country, we’d still recommend bringing along a decent wetsuit.

A winter 5/3mm is perfect for the cooler times of year, or a sealed-seam 3/2mm is ideal for Cornwall’s balmy summer and autumn seasons.

Fins

It’s essential to use a pair of comfortable, powerful, bodyboarding swim fins to get the most from the awesome waves on the camp.

Leash

It’s a simple insurance policy on any trip or weekend, so don’t forget a leash. It’ll save you a whole load of unnecessary swimming.

Sun protection

There are a range of sun creams geared specifically for bodyboarding. We can attest they actually stay on in the water, and we’ve tested them in some searing conditions.

While we can’t guarantee bright blue skies, there’s nothing worse than having to sit out on an epic session because your sun cream washed off yesterday and today you’re painfully crispy.

Clothing

Please bring multiple layers to be ready for all weather conditions.

Packed Lunch

Please bring a packed lunch for Saturday.

Small Change

Please bring some small change to contribute to beach car parks if we go mobile.

RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES

Bodyboard bag

A decent board bag will keep your kit safely protected, and have room leftover for bulky things like your wetsuit, fins and a towel. They range from £20 to more than £100 – the more you pay, the better storage and protection you tend to get.

Coat Hanger

To hang up your wetsuit in between sessions.

Board sock

Board socks perform a dual purpose, protecting your board from the sun, and drying you off as it’s a handy towel. The humble board sock is a great all-rounder.

Fin socks

Fin socks are a standard piece of kit for Britain, even in the summer. They protect your feet from rubbing and sharp rocks, as well as keeping them toasty on the early-morning sessions.

Heel shields

If you don’t wear wetsuit socks and want to prevent rubbing around your heels, it’s worth considering a set of heel shields. They make fins comfortable, stop chafe and have different thickness levels to suit the snugness of your fin.

Fin tethers

Don’t let a lost fin ruin the rest of your trip. Bag a set of tethers and know you’ll pop up from every duckdive and wipeout with both fins still attached.

Ear plugs

If you are a light sleeper.

Can I bring a non-bodyboarding partner/friend?

Of course! All non-bodyboarding partners and friends are more than welcome to come and watch you shred.

I’ve never ridden an artificial wave before – am I good enough to ride The Wave?

Yes, everyone is good enough. We make sure everyone is well prepared for The Wave.

We do, however, recommend that you join us in Newquay on Saturday so we can give you all the extra tips you need in order to get the most out of The Wave sessions on Sunday.

Do I get a discount if I book more than one person on?

If you book in a group of 5, the fifth person will be free.

I’d like to join the weekend while my family enjoy Newquay for the weekend, is that possible?

You will be sent your pre-arrival information on the Wednesday before the weekend. We will send you the Saturday/Sunday morning meeting time and location in your pre-weekend information email.

Yes, absolutely. We can deliver extra bodyboarding lessons at any time just give us a call on +44 (0) 1637 879571 to arrange the best time for your lesson.

Can I ‘wild camp’ with my van?

Yes! There are wild camping spots in the area if you are lucky enough to find that perfect spot.

Does the evening meal on Saturday cater for all dietary requirements?

We choose our favourite coastal restaurant because of the range of great menu options that it has available. All dietary requirements are catered for.

What time does the weekend finish?

We will send you all the timing information you need to know in your pre-weekend information email (which we send out on the Wednesday before the weekend).

However, if you need to leave early on either day then please let us know at time of booking and we can make sure that your sessions are timed so that you finish in time to get away.

Do I get a discount for bringing my own bodyboard and/or wetsuit?

Equipment hire is not included. Kit hire is an additional cost. We do not offer a discount for bringing your own equipment.

If I bring my own bodyboard and I find that I don’t get on with it are there other options?

We have a full range of hire equipment that we can present to you and recommend the most suitable board for you to progress on but this would need to be pre-booked before the weekend. If you have reservations about your kit, please let us know in advance and we can help you out

My partner/friends are different bodyboard levels to me, will this be ok?

You’ll be asked to fill in an enrolment form as part of the booking process. You’ll signify which level of bodyboarder you are. You may be in different groups suited to your ability. However, there will be plenty of time to see each other back at your accommodation and during our social evening meals.

Can I switch my bodyboarding level during the weekend?

Before booking we ask you to fill out an enrolment form to gauge your current level. If during the weekend you would benefit from changing groups, your instructor will organise for you to move groups, no problem! Please be aware that we can’t change your time slot for your sessions at The Wave. We pride ourselves on coaching everybody as an individual, so you will always receive individual feedback throughout each session.

What happens if the surf conditions aren’t good enough?

We choose the time of year and location for our events based on local knowledge and historical swell data. In the event of flat waves or stormy conditions, we will offer alternative activities to help you get the most out of the ocean conditions. This may include stand-up paddleboarding, coasteering, kayaking or other coastal activities.

Please be aware that in nearly 20 years of delivering coaching weekends we have only experienced conditions that have caused us to postpone a couple of times, and of course the waves at The Wave are very consistent!

Please visit our T&Cs for more information.

What are the surf conditions likely to be during my stay?

With decades of experience and knowledge within our team, we pick the best dates that the surf conditions are most consistent and will be most suitable for the group. We’ll send you a brief predicted forecast in the pre-weekend pack on the Wednesday before the weekend. We choose Newquay due to the huge variety of beaches. The beautiful long sandy beaches offer peaks for all abilities, the skill is to know which is best on the tide and wind conditions that are on offer. That’s where our local guides are worth their weight in gold. We pride ourselves in having you in the right place for the best waves for your ability each weekend.

Can I spend Saturday with you and then drive up to Bristol and spend Saturday night in accommodation there before joining you at The Wave on Sunday?

Yes, no problem. We will arrange meeting times with you – just let us know.

Are there any age restrictions?

If you are under 18 we will need to chat to you on the phone and you will need to be accompanied on the trip by a parent or guardian throughout the weekend.

If you are 65 or over, we’d love to chat to you about the weekend before you book – please email us to arrange a time and we’ll contact you or you can call us on +44 (0) 1637 879571.

Are the holidays predominantly children and/or men?

We have a great mix of all ages from young whippersnappers to silver surfers.

The gender ratio at the moment is around 60% men to 40% women, but this is constantly changing and Bodyboard-Holidays is inclusive to all.

How will we travel to the surf?

After meeting on Saturday morning, we’ll split each group according to ability levels. After getting changed, we’ll take a short walk to the beach. If we decide to go mobile to a different beach you may be asked to drive your vehicle. This would be organised with you prior to the weekend – we car-share to reduce our environmental impact. If you don’t want to drive, no worries! If you can’t get from Newquay to The Wave please let us know in advance and we will try to help out.

Where do I park?

Newquay – there is a pay and display car park a short walk from our meeting point. We will supply further details and costs in the pre-weekend information pack.

The Wave – there is a large car park that is free but we recommend you get there early to guarantee yourself a space as it can get busy. Please be aware there is a fair walk, which will take around 15 minutes to get to the facility so please arrive in plenty of time and bring everything you need from your vehicle (on occasion there is a transfer available).

Can I bring my dog?

Newquay – Yes! Several people bring their dogs on our Newquay coaching weekends. Some leave their dog in their van whilst they surf.

Alternatively, we can organise for a dog-sitter to look after your four-legged friend. Contact us for details and costs.

The Wave – Unfortunately they do not allow dogs or other pets at The Wave, with the exception of Service or Assistance dogs.

Do you have showers at the centre?

Newquay – There are public showers on the promenade at Towan beach. They are generally operational year-round. Perfect for a quick rinse off.

The Wave – Yes, there are changing cabins, bathrooms and showers available at The Wave.

What will we do about food?

Please see our Food Tab for all the relevant details.

Can my partner come to the evening meal?

Yes, partners are welcome to join the evening meal – just let us know at the welcome meeting and we will add them to our booking.

Can I make contact from abroad?

If you are based outside of the UK and would like to chat through the weekend details, we can be contacted through WhatsApp, Zoom, Facetime or Skype, just let us know by email and we can arrange this with you.

What happens if I want to cancel my booking?

If you can no longer join the trip please let us know as soon as possible via email. Your cancellation will be effective from the date that it is received by Bodyboard-Holidays. Cancellation charges are payable as follows:

  • Over 12 weeks – deposit only (one third of the total trip price)
  • 36 days to 12 weeks – 50% of total cost
  • 21-35 days – 75% of total cost
  • Under 20 days – 100% of total cost

However, if your cancellation is within the terms of your insurance policy, you may be able to make a claim. Further information here. https://bodyboard-holidays.com/terms-conditions/

Tripadvisor

“Such an epic fun weekend on the bodyboarding coaching weekend with Rob Barber and his awesome team (Luke, Gareth, Chris, Jamie, Jack, and Hannah). Fun waves to be had even though the forecast was looking small the swell definitely picked up or the forecast was wrong so proves you should always turn up and get in!  I was learning rolls and spins 70% there!”

Lizzie

“Have just completed the coaching weekend in Newquay with my 13 year old daughter. I am totally shocked at the level of improvement she made over a single weekend…. she has gone from playing in white water to competently getting out back and trimming on open faced waves. We both can’t wait for the next coaching weekend!
