Our customer feedback has suggested we extend our popular Cornwall bodyboard weekends to run over a whole week, and who are we to disappoint?
Our aim on the Cornwall Retreat is to base you in the heart of the action, you will be staying in our Bodyboard-Holidays apartment that looks right over the ocean that you will be jumping into every day. While remaining agile, we can keep an eye on the swell and deploy to the best waves at a moment’s notice.
While Newquay has a number of top quality breaks, it’s only the tip of the iceberg – with two entire swell-soaked coastlines chock full of nooks, crannies and offshore winds to take advantage of!
We’ll check the charts every night, be on alert to mine some early morning Cornish gold every morning, and plunder the incredible beaches, shoreys, wedges, reefs and sandbanks, which we’ve been bodyboarding here for 30 years.
So if you want to take your riding to the next level, perfecting spins, boosting rolls, or simply pulling in and scoring some perfect hollow barrels in groomed groundswell, we have you covered on our epic Cornwall Retreat.
We will also be putting on a bonus sunset SUP & prosecco/pint session to enjoy one of the iconic Cornish sunsets and treating you to a VIP sunset meal at our favourite beach bar.
Cornwall is of course the undisputed surf capital of the UK, and on the Newquay Retreat you’ll experience the best of its amazing variety of spots – think golden beaches, beautiful waves and epic sunsets.
As well as experiencing the best Newquay can offer, we’ll also be taking you around the county and off the beaten track to places that only a few know about.
We’ll find those gorgeous hidden gems littered along both of Cornwall’s intricate coastlines, making sure you bodyboard the best waves at the most beautiful spots, staying as crowd-free as possible.
Because this is where we’re from – as locals we understand the best tide-and-wind combination at every top beach, reef, wedge and secret spot. Over the years we’ve done the hard work so you don’t have to.
Our aim is to improve your skills, maximise your fun and enjoy the best of beautiful Kernow’s incredible coastline.
A gorgeous stretch of golden sands in the heart of Cornwall’s north coast, Perranporth picks up loads of swell and has multiple peaks, so we can pick our own empty wedges to enjoy.
Offshore on a SE wind like many of Cornwall’s north coast beaches, it’s a great place to pick an empty peak and stroke into some nice long walls.
One of the premier beach breaks on the north coast, Porthtowan works throughout the tides, with a powerful low tide sandbar giving peeling tubes left and right.
Located in a stunning stretch of coast famed for its tin mining, Porthtowan is a popular spot but has ample room on the pushing tide to bag some excellent waves to remember.
One of the best wedges in the UK, Tolcarne is located in the middle of Newquay and stands up as a classic A-frame left which refracts off the cliff and fires riders down the line into advancing sections.
A hugely fun ride from mid to high tide, it’s the premier place on the north coast to launch big manoeuvres and see dramatic improvements in your air game.
The most sheltered of Newquay’s town beaches, Towan is the perfect spot when the unprotected west-facing beaches are big and blown out, still providing clean conditions.
The harbour at Towan provides fairly consistent lefts, and is best at mid tide on the push. A great place to head on a SW wind when everywhere else is too big.
The jewel in the crown of Cornwall’s surf scene, Fistral is a high-quality beachbreak providing excellent waves on an offshore SE wind.
It works on all stages of the tide and offers multiple peaks. There’s a reason it’s the UK’s most famous surf beach!
A hidden spot capable of giving some excellent left-handers, Spot W is tucked away and enjoys a decent swell and a S/SW wind.
Great Western Beach
The central beach of Newquay’s arsenal, located between Tolcarne and the more protected Towan, Great Western works best on a similar swell, and can give consistent, clean conditions on a SW wind, working both lefts and rights.
A great option when the bigger, more exposed beaches like Fistral are sizeable and suffering in cross/onshore winds.
Facing straight north, St Ives’ Porthmeor Beach enjoys slightly more protection from south westerly winds, and can deliver some amazing waves, peeling left and right in front of its golden sands.
The famous 3-mile long stretch of stunning beach curves around St Ives Bay on the north coast and gives plenty of room for beginner and intermediate riders to see huge gains in their riding.
Picks up a large amount of swell and can get extremely good with 150m+ long rides. A superb spot to watch the sun dip over the dunes after a fun evening session.
The best beach break on the south coast, Praa Sands produces punchy top-to-bottom waves on a mid-high tide. Praa gives you good chances to tuck into some quality tubes and is offshore if the winds switch N/NE.
One of the best reef breaks in the UK, Porthleven is a top spot for those riders with more experience, who’d like to drop into some heavier waves.
Actually featuring two reefs – with the smaller but bowlier spot in front of the famous harbour wall – Porthleven is revered and rightly so.
Picking up the faintest ripple of swell in the North Atlantic, Britain’s most westerly mainland spots can get extremely good on a NE/E/SE wind, and boast some of the clearest air and water you’ll find anywhere.
Whatever your budget and travel style, there’s an accommodation option for you in Newquay.

As well as coaching, we’re also keen to develop your learning and understanding of the sport in general. This is why we offer a separate Q&A session, answering all things bodyboarding: equipment, travel, safety, surf prediction, understanding pressure charts and bodyboarding fitness. Learning is tailored to each ability group, and no question is too big or small.
Photo and video analysis
Our professional photographers and videographers will capture you in action throughout the weekend. We’ll look at the footage and images during the photo and video analysis sessions. Seeing yourself bodyboarding is a fantastic way to improve and you’ll get a copy of all the action to take home with you at the end of the weekend to continue to use as reference in order to keep improving until your next bodyboard weekend/holiday. You will be given a memory stick with all of the video footage and sent a link to an online gallery to access your photos. Expect some great shots for your social media!
Our photography team works hard to ensure that everyone receives an excellent selection of imagery. This is all included in the price of the weekend.
We want to maximise your time in the water on this retreat, which is why – having checked the charts the night before – we usually get up at the right time to get the best tide, giving us the jump to get to the best waves.

As Newquay natives, we of course know all of the best places to eat in the town, guaranteeing you fresh, healthy food at good rates.
Newquay is rapidly expanding its culinary offering and has some of the best bars, restaurants and eateries in the county. If you’d prefer to swing a spatula in our accommodation’s kitchen and cook up a storm instead that’s fine – there are a number of places to pick up ingredients a short distance away.
During the week, we will have some evening meals together. These are entirely optional, but are a great chance to get to know each other better. We’ll pick our fave coastal restaurants. One evening we will also enjoy a VIP experience in our favourite beach bar with dinner and drinks. This is included in the price and always a highlight of the week.
During on our daily surfaris we’ll be popping into a number of Cornwall’s beachside cafes to refuel between sessions, as well as grabbing a coffee and planning our next destination on the mission.
Within hours you’ll be becoming a local, learning all the best places to surf and eat. Remember to always keep a couple of quid in your change pocket as an emergency pasty fund! We will send you further details about the meals in the pre-trip email.
Our coaching team offers daily tuition, tailored to your ability with instructors who are in-house qualified and fully insured. The team includes experienced lifeguards, some with 30 years of surfing experience and 20 years of worldwide travel experience, including multiple-times British number 1 and Team Coach Rob Barber.
Foundation level instruction
You’ll never be thrown straight into the deep end. We’ve got your back whatever your ability – that’s a promise. Likewise, intermediate and advanced-level coaching is individually tailored.
Don’t stress if you’re a beginner – in this camp there’s something for everyone, and we all have to start somewhere. In fact, you’ll be amazed how quickly you master paddling out to catch good-quality waves, and we’re committed to patiently helping you progress.
To aid with this, we send out a pre-event form so that you can share information about your ability before you arrive. If you haven’t attended a coaching weekend or holiday before, don’t worry – we can have a surf assessment chat, get to grips with your riding and help plot you a path of improvements.
Our coaching covers all levels of riding, with separate ability groups and instructors to suit your standard, whether you’re a novice or a pro. Some of the riders that have attended our weekends have wanted to learn the most gymnastic aerial moves. The use of video and photo analysis, combined with the invaluable in-water tips after each ride, can see you improve your style and nail those specific moves that you’ve always wanted to land. We help everyone achieve their goals.
If you’re coming by car, our accommodation is located close to Fistral Beach, Newquay. We will email you an information pack with directions on Wednesday before the retreat starts.
There are good air links into Newquay, you find the full fight list here: https://www.cornwallairportnewquay.com/flying-to-cornwall
Newquay also has a centrally located train and bus stations.
Day to day travel:
We will meet up early every morning for a coffee and quick meeting to plan the day’s activities. We will either walk to the best surf spots in the area or we hit the road on a surfari depending on conditions!
We offer transport to the surf spots on the retreat, we’ll explain how this works on the run up to the camp. If you’d like to drive yourself, this is fine, we try and minimise our footprint when on surfari, both to the atmosphere and in the often small coastal car parks!
Cornwall – also known as ‘Kernow’ in its mother tongue – is a wild, rugged county, located in the far south-western tip of England.
Apart from its world-class beaches, excellent variety of waves and high swell consistency, it boasts a unique culture, incredibly clean air, and bright light – it’s no wonder poets, authors and artists have been coming here for centuries!
Head back in land from Cornwall’s beautiful beaches, bays and coves and you’ll find wilderness moorland, granite-topped hills, ancient stone structures and ubiquitous tin-mine pump houses, unmistakable silhouettes of its famous mining history.
Today, Cornwall’s main industry is tourism, and there is a million and one things to do in Newquay alone. For instance, why not experience the thrill of coasteering, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding at our sister company, the Newquay Activity Centre?
It’s a fun way to make the most of a lazy afternoon or to give another water sport a try. As retreat guests you’ll enjoy a discount, so let us know if you plan to widen your adrenaline-seeking buzz in advance so we can get you on a session. Remember we supply a sunset SUP session as part of the trip. It’s a great way to explore the coast!
Cornwall’s air and sea climate is the warmest in the UK. Thanks to both the jet stream in the atmosphere and the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean, Cornwall is blessed with a comparatively mild climate and temperate seas, all year round.
With a long, intricate and varied coastline developing its own micro-climates from one beach to the next, you’re likely to be soaking up the rays as much as the waves, and you can always find somewhere offshore!
Our Cornwall Retreat is prime time deliverance – low crowds, the warmest sea temperatures of the year and the most consistent opportunity for swell. It’s also normally a banker for good weather, so long-period barrels and barbecues, what could be better!
We offer an excellent selection of kit hire for the weekend. Just send us an email or call us on +44 (0) 1637 879571 to let us know what you would like to hire and we will get it ready and waiting for you when you arrive. So once it is all organised all you need to think about is the surf, sea and sun! Please see the Price Tab for our hire rates.
If you have your own kit please bring it along with you, we recommend that you have the following kit for the weekend:
Being Britain and not the tropics, we’d recommend a board with a bit of flex! Therefore aim to bring a board with either a stringered PE or a low-density PP core.
To help with this, we can supply hired boards which are perfect for use in British temperatures and wave types.
If you need to hire one for the trip, or are interested in trying one different to your own, get in touch and we can get you sorted with the right-sized board so you can get the most out of the holiday.
Although Cornish waters are some of the mildest in the country, we’d still recommend bringing along a decent wetsuit.
A winter 5/3mm is perfect for the cooler times of year, or a sealed-seam 3/2mm or 4/3mm is ideal for Cornwall’s balmy summer and autumn seasons.
It’s essential to use a pair of comfortable, powerful, bodyboarding swim fins to get the most from the awesome waves on the camp.
It’s a simple insurance policy on any trip or weekend, so don’t forget a leash – it’ll save you a whole load of unnecessary swimming.
There are a range of sun creams geared specifically for bodyboarding. We can attest they actually stay on in the water, and we’ve tested them in some searing conditions.
While we can’t guarantee bright blue skies, there’s nothing worse than having to sit out on an epic session because your sun cream washed off yesterday and today you’re painfully crispy.
Please bring multiple layers to be ready for all weather conditions.
Please bring a packed lunch for Saturday.
Please bring some small change to contribute to beach car parks if we go mobile.
A decent board bag will keep your kit safely protected, and have room left over for bulky things like your wetsuit, fins and a towel. They range from £20 to more than £100 – the more you pay, the better storage and protection you get.
To hang up your wetsuit in between sessions.
Board socks perform a dual purpose, protecting your board from the sun, and drying you off as it’s a handy towel. The humble board sock is a great all-rounder.
Fin socks are a standard piece of kit for Britain, even in the summer. They protect your feet from rub and sharp rocks, as well as keeping them toasty on the early morning sessions.
If you don’t wear wetsuit socks and want to prevent rubbing around your heels, it’s worth considering a set of heel shields. They make fins comfortable, stop chafe and have different thickness levels to suit the snugness of your fin.
Don’t let a lost fin ruin the rest of your trip. Bag a set of tethers and know you’ll pop up from every duckdive and wipeout with both fins still attached.
If you are a light sleeper.

– split the payment into three instalments

Can I reserve a spot to think about it for a few days?
Due to this weekend being in high demand, we have very limited availability. However, we can hold your space for 24 hours without payment.
How much will I spend?
Please see the Price Tab for what to budget for the weekend.
How soon should I book?
ASAP! These coaching weekends fill up quickly and with limited spaces available at The Wave you should really get a wriggle on.
I’d like to come on the trip but I can’t attend for the full duration?
If you can’t make the full holiday, it is possible to just join us for one or two days of the week. Please see the Price Tab
Can I attend on my own?
Yes, definitely! We pride ourselves on being super welcoming and friendly. Most of our guests arrive solo and leave with a host of new bodyboarding buddies.
Do I get a discount if I book more than one person on?
If you book in a group of 5, the fifth person will be free.
I’d like to join the week while my family enjoy Newquay for the week, is that possible?
Yes! This is a scenario that we are very familiar with. Why not make a family break of the week? You can join the bodyboard week with us while the rest of your family enjoy Newquay. Please contact us if you need a hand organising accommodation. Book early to avoid disappointment and get the best prices.
What time do I need to arrive?
You will be sent your pre-arrival information on the Wednesday before the weekend. We will send you the Saturday/Sunday morning meeting time and location in your pre-weekend information email.
I’ll be arriving early, is it possible to book another bodyboard lesson prior to the retreat?
Yes, absolutely. We can deliver extra bodyboarding lessons at any time just give us a call on +44 (0) 1637 879571 to arrange the best time for your lesson.
Do the optional meals cater for all dietary requirements?
We choose our favourite coastal restaurant because of the range of great menu options that it has available. All dietary requirements are catered for.
What time does the trip finish?
We finish after lunch on the last afternoon. We often have lunch together. You can expect to leave by 3pm. If you need to leave earlier then please let us know at time of booking and we can make sure that your group sessions are timed so that you finish in time to get away.
Do I get a discount for bringing my own bodyboard and/or wetsuit?
Equipment hire is not included. Kit hire is an additional cost. We do not offer a discount for bringing your own equipment.
If I bring my own bodyboard and I find that I don’t get on with it are there other options?
We have a full range of hire equipment that we can present to you and recommend the most suitable board for you to progress on but this would need to be pre-booked before the weekend. If you have reservations about your kit, please let us know in advance and we can help you out
My partner/friends are different bodyboard levels to me, will this be ok?
You’ll be asked to fill in an enrolment form as part of the booking process. You’ll signify which level of bodyboarder you are. You may be in different groups suited to your ability. However, there will be plenty of time to see each other back at your accommodation and during our social evening meals.
Can I switch my bodyboarding level during the holiday?
Before booking we ask you to fill out an enrolment form to gauge your current level, if during the weekend you would benefit from changing groups your instructor will organise for you to move groups, no problem! Please be aware, we pride ourselves on coaching everybody as an individual, so you will always receive individual feedback throughout each session.
What happens if the surf conditions aren’t good enough?
We choose the time of year and location for our events based on local knowledge and historical swell data. In the event of flat waves or stormy conditions, we will offer alternative activities to help you get the most out of the ocean conditions. This may include stand-up paddleboarding, coasteering, kayaking or other coastal activities.
Please be aware that in nearly 20 years of delivering coaching weekends we have only experienced conditions that have caused us to postpone a couple of times, and of course the waves at The Wave are very consistent!
Please visit our T&Cs for more information.
What are the surf conditions likely to be during my stay?
With decades of experience and knowledge within our team, we pick the best dates that the surf conditions are most consistent and will be most suitable for the group. We’ll send you a brief predicted forecast in the pre-week pack on the Wednesday before the trip. We choose Newquay due to the huge variety of beaches. The beautiful long sandy beaches offer peaks for all abilities, the skill is to know which is best on the tide and wind conditions that are on offer. That’s where our local guides are worth their weight in gold. We pride ourselves in having you in the right place for the best waves for your ability each weekend.
Are there any age restrictions?
If you are under 18 we will need to chat to you on the phone and you will need to be accompanied on the trip by a parent or guardian throughout the weekend.
If you are 65 or over, we’d love to chat to you about the weekend before you book – please email us to arrange a time and we’ll contact you or you can call us on +44 (0) 1637 879571.
Are the holidays predominantly children and/or men?
We have a great mix of all ages from young whippersnappers to silver surfers.
The gender ratio at the moment is around 60% men to 40% women, but this is constantly changing and Bodyboard-Holidays is inclusive to all.
How will we travel to the surf?
After the meeting on the first morning, we’ll split each group according to ability levels. After getting changed, we’ll take a short walk to the beach. If we decide to go mobile to a different beach you may be asked to drive your vehicle. This would be organised with you prior to the retreat, we car-share to reduce our environmental impact. If you don’t want to drive – no worries!
Where do I park?
There are two spaces allocated at the apartment, there is also a pay and display car park a short walk away, with some free residential parking available nearby.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes! Please contact us if you would like to bring your dog so we can discuss your options for this. There is also a dog sitting service in Newquay that we can recommend if you need it.
Can I join the holiday but not take the accommodation?
Yes, please see the Accommodation Tab for your options.
Do I have to stay in a shared room or are there private room options available in the apartment?
Our apartment has limited spaces available, but there is a private double room, see the Prices page. Call us if you would like to discuss the options.
What will we do about food?
We ask you to prepare or buy a packed lunch for each day so that we can enjoy our surfari on the coast. We’d recommend fruit, nuts and other fibre filled snacks to keep you energised for your water sessions. We then eat our lunch while watching the video review sessions, this may be back at the apartment but it is best to have something ready if we do travel elsewhere. We visit our favourite beach bar or local restaurant on one of the evenings and enjoy fantastic local food, all dietary requirements can be catered for. We some times grab lunch from one of our fave beachside cafes.
Can my partner come to the evening meal and other social times?
Yes, partners are welcome to join the evening meals and other social times, just let us know at the welcome meeting and we will add them to our group bookings.
Can I make contact from abroad?
If you are based outside of the UK and would like to chat through the weekend details, we can be contacted through WhatsApp, Zoom, Facetime or Skype, just let us know by email and we can arrange this with you.
Do I need a visa?
At present, there is no visa required to enter the UK for European citizens. However, this can vary for non-European visitors, so you should seek advice about any possible visa requirements from your travel agent in advance.
What happens if I want to cancel my booking?
If you can no longer join the trip please let us know as soon as possible via email. Your cancellation will be effective from the date that it is received by Bodyboard-Holidays. Cancellation charges are payable as follows:

All the fun and games of our Summer Retreat but as the weather and the water gets slightly colder we like to make the most out of our coaching sessions by offering one extra-long surf per day.
This means no more changing in and out of a wet wetsuit! After our bodyboarding we’ll then warm up and do our video analysis session followed by a theory session in our warm and cosy venue!
