Bodyboarding in Europe, throughout this eclectic continent, is a never-ending dream.
Which is why we at Bodyboard-Holidays have made it our mission to take you to its best waves at the best times of year. You can experience for yourself the most tempting fruits of Europe.
Check out our range of trips below and find the perfect one for you:
This part of the world is unique in that travelling between its nations is fast, easy and incredibly rewarding. Whether you’re in the UK, France, Spain or Portugal, you’re never too far from a coastline and that means an abundance of waves!
In visiting the countries of Europe you of course get quality surf, but you also get to experience so much more – including different languages, foods and cultures, all in super close proximity, and within easy reach of the many budget airlines criss-crossing the continent.
On a wider scale, Europe has one of the planet’s best swell-generating machines to thank for everything it gets: the North Atlantic Ocean. It delivers some of the most consistent waves anywhere in the world, giving us travelling bodyboarders a huge variety of options to suit up and get wet.
UK and Ireland Bodyboarding
The coastline of UK and Ireland is intricate and multi-directional, with a huge number of beaches, coves and surf breaks, chock full of fun waves just begging to be ridden with a bodyboard.
Unlike similar latitudes on the other side of the pond, the Gulf Stream helps keep the western seas comfortable, and due to the cragginess of the coast you’ll always find somewhere offshore!
In the UK and Ireland you can experience hundreds of miles of beautiful beaches, gorgeous coves and colossal cliffs, the edges of island nations rich with history, industry and innovation.
In the north, Ireland’s breaks are perfectly set up for bodyboarding, as we trip to the surf town of Bundoran and tackle all the region’s top spots, such as The Peak, Tullan Strand, Black Spot, Easkey and Lissadell, as well as find some hidden secrets.
On this trip you get to experience the thrill of exploring ancient Celtic lands, checking out crumbling old castles, witnessing stunning green vistas, and enjoying the famous warmth of the Emerald Isle’s Guinness-toting locals.
Back on the mainland we journey to the small, rugged country of Wales, enjoying the fun, peeling waves of the Gower Peninsula at Llangennith Beach, a famously long stretch of golden sands, backed by steep green cliffs.
This is a perfect place to learn the basics of bodyboarding – how to paddle out through whitewater, duckdive, take off on unbroken waves and cut along, learning things like hand placement and rail control.
In the mountainous north, we also run a very unique bodyboarding weekend, checking out the best spots on the dramatic Llyn Peninsula, before experiencing the guaranteed, identical repetition of man-made inland waves at the Surf Snowdonia resort. There aren’t many places you can bodyboard in the mountains!
Of course, as our home, we run a number of trips around this buzzing base of British bodyboarding.
From bodyboard coaching at the famous Fistral Beach on our Newquay weekends, to exploring further afield and enjoying the top breaks of Cornwall’s North Coast, we’ll check the beautiful beaches of Porthtowan and Perranporth, bodyboard one of the top wedges in the country at Tolcarne, and seek out some other hidden spots.
With so many spots to bodyboard in the south west, we also host annual trips to the fun peaks and tubes of Croyde and surrounding beaches in Devon, an amazing little corner of the county to advance your riding and experience the joy of riding inside a peeling barrel.
A breathtaking area, the surrounding North Devonshire coast is wild and rugged, and looks just as it did when it was carved out 10,000 years ago in the last Ice Age.
Away from Northern Europe, we head south and explore the hot and sunny climes of Portugal. A gorgeous wave-rich destination, there are very few countries which can offer such a tantalising selection of brilliant beaches and wedges, perfectly setup to help your bodyboarding reach that next level.
We stay in the heart of the action, where the bodyboard world tour returns year after year, riding some of the best beaches on the Iberian Peninsula. It’s no wonder multiple world champion bodyboarder Pierre Louis Costes now calls this place home!
In Portugal you’ll experience a mix of cultures and incredible gastronomy, as well as see stunning mountains, forests and varied coastlines, open to swell from the north, west and south.
The popularity of bodyboarding in other European nations is growing exponentially too. In Scotland you’ll find many a crystal-clear gem, inevitably tucked away behind incredible landscapes, lush green pastures and long-haired Viking/cow hybrids.
France has a huge bodyboardable coastline, starting in Brittany in the north west, an intricately beautiful region of secluded bays, gorgeous beaches and quiet coves, facing in every single direction.
Head down the coast and you come to the long, golden stretches of sand towards Hossegor in the south, where you can find endless warm-water peaks, surfable in board shorts.
With a westerly swell and an easterly wind, here you’ll find some of the very best beach breaks in the world at La Graviere and Capbreton.
A summer favourite, if it’s crowded just take a short stroll down the long beach, and more often than not you’ll have an equally good peak all to yourself.
In Spain, the Cantabrian, Asturian and Galician regions pack some of the most beautiful stretches of coastline you’ll ever see – backed by soaring forested hills and snow-capped mountains, here you can bodyboard a staggering variety of waves, all alongside some of the best food and traditional culture you’ll find anywhere.
From the 300-yard walls of Mundaka to the playful A-frame waves of Playa de Andrin (not to mention a treasure trove of equally excellent spots around most corners), the Spanish north coast is alive with bodyboarding, and some of the sport’s top riders, like Basque rider Alex Uranga.
