Sanur Bodyboard Holiday | Bali’s East Coast Adventure
Ability: All abilities welcome from new bodyboarders to experienced shredders.
You can now choose to spend one, two, three or four weeks with us in Indonesia. The weeks run consecutively, so let us know which you want to attend. The final week is to Sanur on the east coast of Bali and it’s one of our favourite locations.
Bali has naturally become a popular destination for travelling bodyboarders and has earned a reputation for the hot spots becoming crowded in the water, but with a little adventurous spirit uncrowded perfection is still very much attainable. Some of the better known breaks on the east coast are Keramas, Sri Lanka, Serangan and Nusa Dua. But it is the breaks that are under the radar that we love.
Since first visiting Bali in 1996 the east coast was generally undiscovered. Walking along the black sand beaches in searing heat in the Padang Galak area, picking our way through paddy fields on motorbikes and following tip offs and hand drawn maps we knew that there had to be some awesome bodyboarding spots. Slowly but surely they have been unearthed and fortunately we have had years of enjoyment scoring waves on the east side of the island. For many years most visitors to Bali thought that the east side only worked during the wet season of October to March. With fun beach breaks, wedging sand bars and awesome reefs the east is a beast! A fun park for bodyboarding.
The east coast has a reputation as having more right hand breaking waves than Bali’s west coast. However there is a great mix of both rights and lefts. The swell size and direction will dictate each daily surfari. In previous years we’ve travelled to the same spot for 6 days in a row and scored it uncrowded and perfect. On other trips we have visited numerous different spots throughout the week and ticked off a list of well known and under the radar waves. It is essential to know where you need to be, at what time for the best tide, to miss the crowd and to avoid traffic. It’s this mission that our awesome guides have spent their lives achieving. So your experience will benefit from their years of experience. To quote multiple world bodyboarding champion Pierre Louis Costes after his stay on the east coast of Bali
“I love Keramas, I got so lucky there to score it pretty uncrowded, it’s such a sick wave to surf, to draw a line and bust big, you can become a very capable bodyboarder surfing Keramas often, it helped me improve a lot going right.”
You can expect warm, sunny weather every day with the odd evening downpour depending on how quickly the seasons are changing from wet season to dry. We hit the road early to score the best waves. A huge benefit of surfing on the east coast is the morning sunrise. An experience that you will remember forever as you paddle out to an illuminated red sky, as the island of the gods awakens.
We stay in twin or double rooms in a hotel in Sanur that we have been working with for many years. The standard of the hotel is good, why not pull up a sun bed for an afternoon of chilling by the pool? Grab a massage to take relaxation to the next level or catch up with home using the wifi? The hotel is centrally located for walking to the shops and cafés. The rooms have air conditioning, are secure and there are plenty of helpful staff onsite. We come back to this hotel year after year due to its consistently high standards. Sanur is loaded with boutiques, antiquities, art shops, fashion retailers and has an excellent café culture. On arrival, we will recommend the hotspots to visit. In previous years our groups have travelled to the nearby waterfalls, hiked volcanoes, visited temples and used the time between sessions to experience the best of Bali. Our accommodation is ideally located as a springboard to enjoy the rest of the island.
