Trip Information

Our Aim

Join us on a journey as old as European surfing itself – chasing the winter sun down to Northern Africa, where we dedicate every day to exploring the epic bodyboarding potential of Morocco’s ancient coastline.

Every year since the 1960s, European surfers have migrated south in the quest for endless summers, finally reaching the dry, dusty gateway to a new continent and parking up their vans for long months of clockwork groundswell.

The search for solitude has been high on the agenda of the Bodyboard Holidays team for a long time now too, and we’re pleased to report with Morocco trips we’ve hit the jackpot.

Away from the more famous spots, we’ve been busy discovering miles of empty beaches, where you’ll find bay after bay of empty peaks and endless untouched point breaks. Having done the hard yards, we’re keen to show you what bodyboarding in Morocco is all about.

So whether you’re looking to polish up your act, make some real progression, or simply enjoy some waves in the sun, we’re set to offer you a week of fantastic bodyboard coaching, soaking up Morocco’s splendour.

Waves

Each day we’ll get up early and score perfect, clean waves, tracking down the best breaks along this special desert-backed coastline.

Morocco is of course known as the land of long, right-hand pointbreaks, but explore this epic stretch of beaches, coves and headlands properly and you’ll find it offers so much more…

Put the time in away from the classic, more crowded spots like Boilers and Anchor Point you can find empty, hidden gems, with everything from top-to-bottom A-frame peaks and wedges, to heavy slabs that you’d swear were in the Canaries.

As well as our own secret right-hand point break (which we can practically guarantee will be 100% empty), there’s also a sick left-hand wedge just below the oceanfront balcony of our accommodation – it couldn’t get much better.

When the swell pumps, we have the option of another superb left-hander close by, which offers up super-long rides (and by long we mean properly long – in one of our video analysis sessions we once recorded a customer clock up a 40-second ride at this particular spot!)

It’s fair to say that fun wedges and reeling points will be the recipe for the week, and with plenty of wave options, we can find spots to suit all abilities, regardless of swell and tide.

Make no mistake, the potential for waves here is insane – there are heaps of other virgin breaks in the area, some of which you could be the first to bodyboard.

So whether you’re converting big carves into reverse spins on smooth, steep open-faced walls, or popping big rolls out of bowly local wedges, scoring the best waves Morocco has to offer with just a few like-minded bodyboarders is an experience you’ll never forget.

Accommodation

Our spectacular clifftop accommodation is awesome, featuring beautiful buildings designed in a traditional Moroccan style and finished to a high standard – they’re absolutely amazing and we’re thrilled to be taking you there.

The surf villa and apartment accommodation have been designed with large, airy rooms to help dissipate the heat, and sporting huge balconies – as well as swimming pool access in some properties.

They’re totally secure and well-maintained, with friendly staff on hand to make your stay as hassle-free and comfortable as possible.

Climate Secret Morocco

Climate

Located on the coastal fringes of the largest desert in the world, our Morocco trip benefits from hot and dry winter weather and warm seas to match.

The waves are consistent from November to March, and the water temperature is pleasant at around 18C – 20C. This means a 3/2mm wetsuit will keep you toasty warm, and on hotter days a shorty is fine.

Food Secret Morocco

Food

Our hosts supply very tasty and nutritious breakfasts, lunches and dinners, which have received many rave reviews by our customers. We have a skilled, local, onsite chef who cooks up a storm!

The food is super healthy and is created using fresh local produce with vegetarian options on offer. You need to pay in cash for your food upon arrival at your accommodation.

The food package is £21 per day, you pay by putting £147 in cash (pounds sterling) in an envelope with your name on it, and hand it to our hosts at the welcome meeting.

You may wish to carry some extra money for snacks along the way too, such as ice creams from the local shops.

Coaching Secret Morocco

Coaching

Suitable for Intermediate to Advanced bodyboarders

Morocco hoovers north and westerly Atlantic swell, which means as well as being super-consistent, it can get quite big. This is a trip for riders who fancy a challenge, and are fit, have experience and are comfortable to paddling out in medium to large powerful waves.

If you’re an intermediate to advanced bodyboarder looking to increase your knowledge and skills, this is the trip for you. Our coaching team offers daily tuition, tailored to your ability with instructors who are in-house qualified and fully insured.

Experienced lifeguards, some have 30 years of surfing experience and 20 years of worldwide travel experience, all trained by multiple-times British National Champion and Team Coach Rob Barber.

The intermediate and advanced-level coaching will be tailored towards the individual.

To aid with this, we send out a pre-event form to measure your ability before you arrive and to double-confirm that you are comfortable in solid surf. If you’ve not attended a coaching holiday before, we will have a surf assessment, get to grips with your riding and help plot you a path of improvements. By the time you fly home you’ll be well on your way to reaching that next level, huge improvements are guaranteed.

Our instructors are on hand with groups in the water, able to give extra tips on the beach, and give detailed feedback during our informal video/photo analysis sessions. Our coaching covers all levels of riding, with separate ability groups and instructors to suit your standard, whether you’re a novice or a pro.

We aim to have one long session or two 2-hour sessions each day, depending on the swell, tide and wind conditions. There will also be both photo and video analysis available following all sessions to help improve your riding, and both will be available to take away at the end of the trip for £50 and £30 respectively.

If you already rip and are just looking forward to tackling some long-period Atlantic swell in good company, you’ll love Morocco – a daily routine of shredding powerful walls, pulling into perfect barrels and boosting off chunky sections in desert offshores.

Travel

You need to make your own travel arrangements to the Agadir Al Massira Airport in Morocco, though we will recommend the best flight arrival and departure times. We can ensure people are arriving and departing at the same time. We then arrange all transfers to and from our accommodation. If you can’t arrive to meet up with our free transfer you can pay for your own taxi to the camp, budget £60 for this. If there are others arriving at similar times we will group you up so that you can split the cost of the transfers.

March 2019 trip – please arrange flights to land between 17.30pm and 19.30pm on the first day of your trip. On the last day of the trip you should plan your flight to leave between 18.30pm and 20.30pm.

November 2019 trip –  please arrange flights to land between 9.30am and 11.30am on the first day of your trip. On the last day of the trip you should plan your flight to leave between 1pm and 3pm.

March 2020 trip – please arrange flights to land between 17.30pm and 19.30pm on the first day of your trip. On the last day of the trip you should plan your flight to leave between 18.30pm and 20.30pm.

If you are flying from the UK or Ireland, EasyJet flights from Gatwick to Agadir are often the cheapest routes with the best times, though you can also easily fly to Morocco from Manchester and Birmingham.
Alternatively, check out SkyScanner to find the nearest flights to your location. When booking, make sure you check the airline’s baggage charges by weight and number, so you don’t get hit with any nasty hidden fees on the day.
Remember – we also hire equipment, which works out cheaper than paying extra for a ‘sports equipment’ bag in the hold, and saves you carrying the thing! Just let us know in advance if this is something you’d like to do.

Once you’ve collected your bags we’ll meet you at the large, green tent across the road from the arrivals area, where our representative will await you. They will have a clipboard with your name on it and will be looking for people with bodyboard bags. Once everyone has arrived we’ll travel in groups to our accommodation, this will take about 90 minutes.

You may have a short wait at the airport as the rest of the group assembles. If this is the case, it might be worth bringing a good book, a Kindle or an iPad. Most flights arrive in the evening, so it’s probably worth bringing some snacks to keep you going until dinner too.

Some customers also choose to fly into Marrakesh, before taking a taxi through the Atlas Mountains to our location. This option is also possible, you would cover the cost of your transfer, it would be £170 each way.
Once we’ve all made our way to our accommodation, you’ll be shown to your rooms, after which we’ll have a group meeting to chat about the holiday ahead and start getting our froth on.

Area Secret Morocco

Area

A typical walk through the nearby town will see you greeted by a flurry of friendly smiles as locals go about their daily business with their ancient donkey-drawn carts.

Picture dusty roads freckled with random goats – it’s a near biblical setting. An incredibly traditional place, the local area has basic amenities, including small shops and a pharmacy.

There’s a weekly market where local families go to buy and sell their produce, as well as stalls that sell Moroccan jewellery and trinkets perfect for gifts.

It’s nice to support this traditional commerce, it’s a good cultural experience, and helps to boost the local economy by picking up a few pieces and leaves good vibes.

The town also boasts a unique range of restaurants and a quaint local bar, where you can have a few quiet beers after a long day scoring epic waves. Anybody that has travelled to Morocco, will know that with it being a ‘dry’ country with regards alcohol, this is very unique!

Kit List

We have pro standard equipment available to hire for the week. Just let us know at the time of booking what you need and your sizes.

Pro standard Bodyboard Hire £40 per week
Wetsuit £40 per week
Fins £20 per week

Bodyboarding is one of life’s great pleasures, and we’re convinced if you haven’t already, you’ll want to get fully kitted out to get the most from the waves.

Bodyboard-Depot offer an excellent selection of kit hire for the trip, which can be ordered in advance. It’s also cheaper to rent equipment with us than paying to bring your own gear – doing this means all you’ll need to think about is the surf, sea and sun!

Feel free to call us on +44 1637 879571 and we can chat with you about what you’d need to hire so it’s ready and waiting for you when you arrive.

Bodyboard

The temperate waters of Morocco are a good destination to head with a stringered PE or low-density PP core. To help with this, we can supply top quality boards to hire which are perfect for use in Morocco’s and wave types.

If you need to hire one, or are interested in trying one different to your own, get in touch and we can get you sorted with the right-sized board so you can get the most out of the trip.

Wetsuit

In Morocco a 3/2mm summer wetsuit is fine, and will help take the edge off any early morning desert offshores before the African sun has had a chance to heat up the beaches.

It doesn’t take long to warm up though, and on the hotter days you’ll love having a shorty in the bag, so worth packing one if you have one at home.

Fins

It’s essential to use a pair of comfortable, powerful, bodyboarding swim fins to get the most from the awesome waves on the trip.

Leash

It’s a simple insurance policy on any trip, so don’t forget a leash – it’ll save you a whole load of unnecessary swimming.

Bodyboard travel bag

A decent board bag will keep your kit safely protected throughout your journey, especially when you consider the brutality of some baggage handlers. They range from £20 to more than £100 – the more you pay, the better protection you get. The best on the market is the Creatures wheelie bag, it’s heat-reflective, padded and you can wheel it around, saving your arms and shoulders for paddling.

Board sock

Board socks perform a dual purpose, protecting your board from the sun, and drying you off as it’s a handy towel. The humble board sock is a great all-rounder.

Heel shields

If you don’t wear wetsuit socks and want to prevent rub around your heels, it’s worth considering a set of heel shields. They make fins comfortable, stop chafe and have different thickness levels to suit the snugness of your fin.

Fin tethers

Don’t let a lost fin ruin the rest of your trip. Bag a set of tethers and know you’ll pop up from every duckdive and wipeout with both fins still attached.

Sun protection

There is a range of sun creams geared specifically for bodyboarding, and we can attest they actually stay on in the water!

On this trip we can virtually guarantee bright blue skies, and there’s nothing worse than having to sit out on an epic session because your sun cream washed off yesterday and today you’re painfully crispy.

What’s Included

  • One week’s awesome accommodation
  • Airport welcome and transfers
  • Surf guiding each day with our local guides to find waves to suit your ability
  • Video and photo analysis to advance your riding
  • Expert tuition tailored to your ability
  • Guaranteed good times!

Every day we’ll be exploring the region’s stunning beaches to track down the best waves on the coast. Starting the day with an awesome breakfast of pancakes, eggs and coffee before hitting the road.

After a few hours in the water we’ll head back to the pad for a refuel or enjoy a beach packed lunch. Once done we’re straight back on it – if it’s been pumping we’ll head back out, or check out different spots to make the most of it before tides drop or swell shifts.

Back at camp we’ll then go through a photo and video analysis session, and people’s time is then their own to chill, head to the markets or top up the tan in the pool.

Evenings are very chilled out, we’ll enjoy a hearty home cooked meal and a few drinks as we watch the Atlantic sunset turn the desert cliffs red before retiring, usually for an early night.

Photography and video analysis will be available throughout all sessions to help improve your riding, and each of these will be available to take away and keep at the end of the week too, for an additional £30 and £50 respectively.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about our Secret Morocco Trip.

Do I need a visa?

Visas are not required for British and European passport holders for stays up to 90 days. Passports must be valid for three months from the date of entry into Morocco.
South African passport holders need to obtain a visa from the nearest Moroccan embassy. For more and updated information please visit https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/morocco.
Please contact your travel agent or airline if you have any further questions. It’s a good idea to carry photocopies of your important documents and guide books, and pack them separately. We also suggest scanning copies and emailing them to yourself for extra reassurance.

I’m a silver surfer, will this be a problem?

If you’re over 60 years old – or will be turning 60 on the trip – we need to chat on the phone prior to booking. Please email us to arrange a time for a call or ring the office on +44 1637 879571

Can we contact you if we have travel problems?

On the day that you travel please keep your mobile phone handy so that we can stay in touch in case of delays and flight changes. Please inform us at the airport if you’re early or delayed for any reason. If you need help to book your flight then just drop us a line.

If you can’t find our representative at the airport, stay there and wait, they won’t be far away, having tracked your arrival time.  However, if you’re having real problems finding them, please call the office on +44 1637 879571 or follow the instructions in your pre-flight email, and one of us will be sure to locate you.

What’s the best way to transport my bodyboard and kit?

Remember to check the baggage size and weight allowance with your airline, as well as read their guidance for carrying bodyboards. Baggage handlers can be unforgiving, so a tough bag and intelligent packing are a must.

Firstly, pack your board(s) in a protective, padded board bag, and write FRAGILE and TOP LOAD ONLY on it with the largest, most permanent marker you can find. Make sure you wrap your towel and clothes around your board inside the bag for added protection. Place your shampoo and other wet toiletries in a separate sealed bag in case of leakage. We also recommend locking your bag zips with a padlock.

Do I need personal travel insurance?

Please advise our coaching staff of any medical complaints or conditions prior to your trip.

We will ask for travel insurance details upon booking, so please organise this nice and early. We will also ask you to fill out an enrolment form with these details before the holiday.

How can I find out about medical advice for travelling?

Health and safety medical advice for travellers can be found at www.doh.gov.uk. Otherwise, contact your GP or the Department of Health (DoH) for further information.

Alternatively, from the UK you can call the helpline on free phone 0800 555777. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) issues up-to-date information on safety issues for countries world-wide. Contact the FCO travel advice line on 020 7238 4503/4504 if you have any concerns.

What currency should I take?

The currency in Morocco is the Dirham, which can only be obtained within Morocco. There are exchange facilities in the airport as well as ATMs. We recommend you get money from the airport ATM on your arrival. Please note traveller’s cheques cannot be exchanged at the airport or at our accommodation.

How much should I budget for the trip?

In addition to the food package, if you aim to budget £10 per day that would be more than sufficient – there’s a great local market (souk) to buy everything from hand-made slippers to local spices, so if you’re looking to take home some presents it could be worth checking out.

Can I make contact from abroad?

If you are based outside of the UK and would like to chat through the trip details, we can be contacted through WhatsApp, Facetime or Skype, just let us know by email and we can arrange this with you.

How do I pay?

Payments are all made via our online invoicing system called Simple Invoices. Once you have confirmed you wish to join a trip we will send you an online invoice via email. Within this email there will be a link where that will take you to our secure payment system where you will need to enter your credit or debit card details to make the payment. In some circumstances we can facilitate a payment plan, just let us know if you wish to discuss this. Full payment must be made 12 weeks prior to the holiday start date.

What happens if I want to cancel my booking?

Over 12 weeks – deposit only (one third of the total trip price)

Tom E

“First time out with Rob and the team who delivered surf, spectacular settings and a gob smacking level of attention to detail for all comers. I came away stoked, a better rider and with loads of happy times. Can’t fault Mr Barber and his crew – the only problems I face is deciding which return visit to make…
